I remember the very first time I actually (finally!) did crow pose. I'd been trying it for months and then one day it just happened. My toes floated a couple inches from the floor and I was flying! I was only up there for about four seconds but a lot happened in that short timeframe.
In the first second there was disbelief. Did I do it??
In the second second there was celebration: Oh My Gah! I DID do it!
In the third & fourth second something happened to my mind. I was so busy keeping myself up there that my usually cacophonous mind went silent.
It was like a great clearing. The sky of my mind, usually crowded with rain clouds, was suddenly clear and blue and bright. It was then and there that I fell in love with arm balances.
That's the real reason why arm balances are part of my practice and why I love to teach them. Not only are they empowering, not only do they make us strong and move us closer toward making the impossible possible; they actually help us achieve a quietness of the mind.
